The red telephone

The famous red telephone booth has been inspired by the dome of a tomb.

Details:

It was designed in 1924 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott during a competition that was organised to design public telephone boxes.
The Post Office insisted on painting the boxes in red for maximum visibility in case of emergency.

The tomb can be seen in the garden of a church, north of London. It belongs to John Soane’s family.
