Russian Mountains… or not!
By Junk (Translasted by Minizyl) - Dec. 7, 2010

The forerunners of roller coasters were called “Russian Mountains”. In Russia, they were and are still called “American Mountains”.

Details:

In Cyrillic, американские горки (amerikanskie gorki), which translates into American Mountains.

The concept originally came from winter sled rides that were held on hills of ice specially built for that purpose in the surroudings of St. Petersburg.
