Lee’s Miserables

During the American Civil War, the general Lee’s Southern troops called themselves “Lee’s Miserables”, as a tribute to Victor Hugo’s book, Les Misérables.

Details:

The reference isn’t really surprising. At that time, Paris was the world’s capital of culture, and Les Misérables spread around the whole world.
It is one of the most read books in the world.
